Get More MPG For Your Car With Simple Devices That Improve Fuel Economy

Let’s face it the way things are going it doesn’t look like the price of fuel is going to drop anytime soon. In fact it looks like things are going to get a lot worse. With this in mind many drivers are on the lookout for devices that improve fuel economy and help them get more MPG for their vehicles (whether that be cars, trucks or SUVs).

For those who can afford it, trading in their existing vehicle for a more fuel efficient model,( as most newer vehicles get more MPG than an older one would) or one of the new Hybrid cars seems to be the way to go. However the majority of us, who’s budget doesn’t stretch to a new car will have to rely on devices that improve fuel economy to get more MPG from their old bangers.

During this fuel crisis (as in any crisis) you will get people coming up with scams and schemes to relieve you of your hard earned cash. Scams claiming to have the latest gadgets that will get you the highest MPG from any car or vehicle. Sadly most of these gadgets are shams or myths, some of which have been around for years and are just now popping up again with a new lease of life thanks to the internet.

However along with the more ridiculous claims of gadgets, gizmos, and devices that improve fuel economy, there are some that just may work. Listed below are some of the more promising ones. Now I’m not claiming that these will get more MPG for your car or improve your fuel economy in any significant way, but after reading up on them, they at least seem more practical than most that I have come across.

Devices that improve fuel economy.

1)Carburettor Mixture Enhancers. This is a device that is installed between the intake manifold and your carburettor, and is supposed to improve the process of vaporising the air/fuel mixture before being burned in the engine.
2)Liquid Mixture Enhancers. These work on a similar principle of the Carburettor Mixture Enhancers but are in liquid form and mixed with your regular fuel.
3)Killer Wires. These are used in replacement of your ordinary spark plugs and are claimed to improve the spark by creating magnetic fields and so improve combustion.
4)Fuel Additives. Such as xylene which is added to your fuel tank along with your regular fuel to give you better fuel economy and get more MPG.
5)Water to Energy Converters. These are small Hydrogen Generators for cars and use electrolysis to produce Hydrogen Oxygen Gas which is mixed with your regular fuel mixture and results in a more efficient burning fuel.

These are just 5 of the devices that improve fuel economy and help you get more MPG. There are hundreds if not thousands more out there. As I mentioned before a lot of these are just scams and not all of them are going to work, but these 5 at least sound practical, and anything that could get more MPG for your car has got to be worth a try.

Carpooling to Work

Thousands more people every month are making the decision to start carpooling with fellow employees to work, especially when they commute to work. Typically people who commute thirty minutes or longer each way should try to make sure that they carpool to work. The environment is becoming more fragile each and everyday and without people doing the right thing, which is protecting it then soon there will terrible consequences. If you value the world and everyone you care about then you should care about the air we all breathe in on a daily basis. If you can help the environment become a safer place by carpooling to work then don’t you think you could make the adjustment to driving with a co-worker to work?

There are now lots of carpool parking lots where you can take your vehicle to and park it for the day while at work and then after work you get dropped off at it and continue home. If enough people started doing this then soon the environment would start becoming a more pleasant place to live. It takes more then a handful of people from different regions to make a difference and everyone needs to unite as one on this situation and try doing something about it.

The government has now begun opening up lanes of most major highways for commuters travelling with more then one passenger in the vehicle. This means if you carpool to work you can use the commuter lane which is basically an express lane that will help you beat rush hour traffic. The time it takes to stop at a carpool parking lot you’ll now start saving by being able to drive in a much less congested lane of the highway. A lot of people only began carpooling because they would then be able to avoid rush hour traffic, and if this is what it takes for people to start helping the environment then so be it. As long as the governments continue adding carpooler lanes onto major highways I feel more and more people will start adapting to carpooling.

Another reason it seems carpooling is becoming more popular is due to the increase in gas prices that everyone is dealing with. A lot of people can’t afford the gas prices that are currently present in most countries and with this a lot of people are forced to carpool. Now although high gas prices aren’t meant to help the environment through more people carpooling, it would as though indirectly it’s been done.

There are lots of reasons why you should be carpooling to work with fellow co-workers and many of them involve you saving time and money so there is really no reason why more people don’t start carpooling. If you save money and time then there isn’t much else that can be offered to entice you to saving the environment, so if this doesn’t do it what will be needed? I hope people can begin to start coming to their senses and start working towards cleaning the environment up.

Online Auto Loans

If you’re someone who is looking to begin driving but don’t have the money to get the car then you’ll need to get a loan. Typically most people will try going to a bank to receive a loan, but if you have bad credit then it can be really difficult to find a loan from one. Also sometimes they will only offer you a very high interest loan which although is better then not getting a loan, you can always find better.

One of the increasingly popular methods of finding auto loans is through the internet, due to many companies now moving into the industry. With many young people looking for car loans the market is huge and now many companies are starting to offer loans for people with good or bad credit. If you want to start looking for a loan online then you’ll need to make sure you do the research. It will take more then a few days to find an auto loan because you need to make sure that you’re getting a good deal.

There are tons of good deals but there are also some horrible deals on the internet for auto loans which is why I recommend you do your research. You should make sure there is a low interest rate but also make sure that there aren’t any small print clauses because often companies will charge hidden fees that if you don’t research the company enough you wouldn’t notice the fee until after you’ve signed and gotten your first bill, which at this point is too late to get out of the loan.

The market for people buying cars online is also on the rise with millions of cars now being bought online. I feel this is another reason why auto loans are becoming increasingly popular with people because if there buying the car online, why not get the financing online as well. I think as more cars get sold on the internet, more loans will be sought after online as well.

The ability to do all you’re shopping and financing online is an amazing thing and many people are now taking advantage of this. Ten years ago not many people knew what the internet was but now billions of people are using the internet worldwide. Cars are very hot on the internet right now with many of the online auction sites offering car sections. You can find a great deal on your auto loan online but you need to do the shopping around in order to ensure you find the best deal.

There are tones of benefits as to why you should get an online auto loan including the fact that it’s completely free process, very quick and you can do it in your own home on your own time. Even if you have bad credit you’ll still be eligible to possibly receive an online auto loan from some of the companies. It’s also very secure now to send personal details over the internet and it’s basically the same as you would do it in real life.

Tips For Driving Manual Transmission

If you decide to buy a manual transmission vehicle then you’ll need to learn how to drive it because it’s a lot different then driving your regular automatic transmission vehicle. There are many things you need to learn and you should find someone you know who you can practice with in order to learn. Once you’ve learned how to drive manual transmission then you should also make sure to keep some tips in the back of your mind in case you run into problems. This article will outline some of the problems that arise and tips you should remember to prevent these problems from ever occurring.

When you park your car and it’s a manual transmission you should park the car in gear and then apply your parking brake. The reason you park it in gear rather then in neutral is to prevent it from rolling when you start it again. When in your driveway if you have room for allowing it to roll a little bit then I would park it in neutral but when on a hill or near other cars keep it in gear.

The ways to ensure you have your manual transmission in the right gear when driving is when it’s smooth and there isn’t any sputtering. If your car is sputtering then you need to switch your transmission to a lower gear and it you hear a very high pitched noise then you need to knock it down a gear or two. Try always making sure that you have it in the right gear and running smoothly without any noises.

The last thing you should always try avoiding is keeping the clutch down when riding around. At traffic lights place the car into neutral and let off of the clutch, as it wears your needle down and causes problems quickly.

If you can follow these simple tips then driving a manual transmission will soon become as simple as riding around in an automatic transmission. If you don’t follow these tips then your car will soon wear down very quickly and you’ll be replacing and fixing parts far more then you need to be and you should make sure that you avoid this at all costs or else it will cost you. A manual transmission is a lot more fun to drive I find and many of the sports cars nowadays are manual transmissions so it’s important to know how to drive a manual car.

The best way to learn is through the help of a family member or friend who already knows how to drive a manual transmission. You should go with them to an empty parking lot and practice there, so that you don’t hit anyone and so that you don’t look like a fool on the road. Once you have it down to a science you’ll be able to take your manual car out onto the roads. It shouldn’t take you long to get use to a manual transmission as long as you can follow a few simple rules.

VW Scirocco

VW Scirocco - Back For Good?

Most people know that the word Scirocco derives from the Mediterranean wind that comes from the Sahara desert you did know that didn’t you? Did you also know that the last Scirocco’s finally rolled off the production line as far back as 1989?

Well after a nineteen year or so absence the Scirocco is back some say by popular demand others say that car manufacturers’ attempts at recycling has started with just the names! Whatever your view on the matter I think the consensus of opinion is that the return of this sporty hatchback is all together a welcome one.

The origins of the Scirocco go back to the early seventies when VW realised they would have to replace the beautiful but rather ageing Karmann Ghia. For this they enlisted the help of the Italian styling guru Giorgetto Giugiaro and so the Scirocco or Type 53 as it was affectionately referred to internally was born.

First appearing in 1974 the Scirocco was a three door sports hatch and was fairly popular selling around 500,000 units by 1981. A few subtle changes were made during the first years of production but it was not until the second generation model arrived in 1982 that the car improved significantly with engine power output and torque up rated and a revised interior. The unique at the time spoiler mounted to the rear window became synonymous with the Scirocco appearance.

Production continued until around 1989 by which time a further 290,000 were produced whilst sales continued to around 1992 until the Scirocco had been replaced by the Corrado. Many Scirocco enthusiasts remain however and there is a thriving owner’s network especially in the UK.

After much press speculation in 2006 VW unveiled the concept version of the Scirocco known as the Iroc at the 2006 Paris Motor Show and it attracted a huge amount of attention.

The Scirocco went on sale in March 2008 and has already divided opinion but it is too early to say whether the lovers of the old Scirocco will embrace the new model.

The Scirocco GT is a three door sports coupe with a 2 litre turbocharged petrol engine developing 200 PS. Acceleration from 0-62 is 7.5 seconds with a top speed of 146mph for the manual version although the automatic is only a second slower. A six-speed auto or manual gearbox is available.

The Scirocco comes with ACC (Adaptive Chassis Control) this allows the driver to adjust the suspension settings to suit conditions and ESP (Electronic Stability Programme). Safety features include all-round disc brakes with ABS and a multi-point airbag system including driver and passenger plus front seats and also curtain airbags.

Options include cruise control and hill hold control. The Scirocco comes with 18” Alloys as standard but 19” are an available extra should you want to really look the business. 2009 should see the arrival of a less potent 1.4 petrol version together with a diesel.

Early reviews of the GT have proclaimed that the handling of the car is exceptional especially at higher speeds with low wind noise and precise cornering. The interior has a high quality feel as you would expect from VW. Fuel economy is better than expected unless you drive the car really hard.

Apparently the Vice-President of VW USA announced that he did not want the Scirocco to go on sale in America as it would clash with sales of the Golf GTI a claim that was later disputed by the CEO of VW who said the final decision rested with him!

Overall residual value should be maintained due to the interest in the Scirocco so it just remains to be seen if the new Scirocco is as popular as its predecessor but I have a more than sneaky feeling that it will.

Rod Building Materials - Which Ones Are the Best and How to Choose Them

If you’re interesting in rod building, you need to start off by thinking about the specific tools you’re going to need. Without these tools, you won’t get very far in the process. Now you could choose to use a kit the first time you try the process and that could be a good way to get some rod building experience. These kits usually include everything you’ll need but when you’re ready to build your dream fishing rod you’ll want to invest in buying the materials discussed below.

Non-Fishing Specific Rod Building Materials

First, you’ll want to gather some of the non-fishing specific materials that you’ll need to have on hand when you are engaging in rod building. Many of these items may already be in your home or may be purchasable from local hardware stores.

One of the best examples is an Exacto knife – these are ideal choices because they are very sharp and also thin which is ideal for the work. You’ll also need to purchase a few other basic items, including a rat tail file, rubber bands, a tape measure, a marker, some paint thinner, and masking tape.

Having a lighter is also a good idea. Additionally, purchase some epoxy. Epoxy is a type of resin that can be added and that hardens to make things stronger and to give protection. You’ll want to get the fastest drying formula you can find. It will probably cost a few dollars more but the speed will make it worth the extra expense.

Finally, invest in a small paintbrush that will make it easier for you to apply materials to small parts of your work area while you’re rod building.

Specific Fishing Equipment

There are a number of items that you’ll want to purchase which will be specific for your fishing rod. Do your homework before choosing the items you want to have on your equipment. Remember the idea is to have a finished product at the end of your rod building that is superior to anything you could purchase off the shelf so you’ll want the highest quality products possible even if they cost more. You can always buy pieces one at a time if necessary – your patience will be repaid in the end.

Some of these items you’ll want to look for include guides. Aftco, Fuji, and Pacific Bay all make some very high quality guides which might be worth your consideration. Remember there are a number of styles of guides you might want to consider when rod building. Pick the one that will be best for your needs.

You’ll also need a good quality blank. This is the basic part of your fishing rod so pick with care. Calstar, Gator Glass, Lamiglas, and Pacific Bay are four of the companies with the highest reputation when it comes to blanks. Before you buy, do some test casting of some of the ones you’re considering so you’ll choose the right choice when you start shopping online.

These are just a few of the fishing materials you’ll need when rod building.

Tips on How to Lower Your Golf Score

The easiest and most effective way to lower your golf score is to improve your putting.

Most golfers can get their ball on the green in at least one to three shots, but it's the putting that takes the skill of golf to a new level and where an average person on the gold course can become a great golfer. The difference between the two is typically the shortest of shots during a round of play.

To learn some great putting tips that can improve your score, keep reading.

Use the Right Putter

It may seem elementary, but there are a lot of golfers using putters that are too small, not heavy enough, too heavy or too big. While you don't have to buy the most expensive putter on the market, you should own a quality putter that fits your body type and actually feels good in your hands.

Some golfers carry two putters, a lighter one for fast greens and a heavier one for slower greens. Typically though, you want a putter with good weight on it and a length that lets you properly control your shot. If, for example, you are a taller person and your putter is too short for your height, you would then likely need to overcompensate by hunching over while putting, and negatively impact your stroke.

Grip Your Putter Well

While you want to grip your putter comfortably, you also need to grip it well. Wearing your gloves, keep your thumbs pointed downward and on the flat surface of the putter grip. You should then grip your putter softly, but consistently.

Once you've settled on a grip, keep it and don't let up until you've followed through with the shot. Though this may initially feel unnatural, ongoing practice will help you to adjust and become more comfortable.

Keep Yourself Stable

In order to become more proficient at putting, you need to focus on keeping your body steady and stable, especially your lower half. Maintain your feet and legs as grounded and steady, and use your upper body to swing the putter while holding the lower portion of your body as still as possible.

Cure Your Yips

A yip is when you miss an easy or short putt. This occassionally happens to everybody - even the best golfers. The best cure is to regain confidence and develop a good putting routine.

If you've ever watched a pro basketball player before he makes a foul shot, he often goes through a routine of movements before making his shot. Watch professional golfers before a put and you'll see they have a pattern of shaking out their gloves, stretching their arms or tapping the putter handle. Though such movements may all look like a series of nervous habits, these routines typically help steady the nerves and develop comfort before the next shot.

These small sets of movements can not only help relax you for your next putt, but also create a rhythm for your shot and keep the number of yips to a minimum.

How a GPS Golf Unit Can Help Your Golf Game

The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a satellite navigation system that offers reliable positioning, timing services and navigation on a constant basis and is freely available to every one. All you need is a GPS receiver and you will be able to get the correct time and location.

In the initial stages of development, no one could have imagined how GPS would eventually become part of our everyday lives and how it would be used in some amazing ways. As GPS was being opened for use to the public by former US President Ronald Reagan, he would never have guessed that a GPS golf system would one day be developed. Well, the GPS golf systems are now available and becoming more and more popular

While playing golf, a GPS golf system makes available maps and any other information about the golf course that is important to help you with playing that particular course. The systems can also track golf balls with implanted trackers in them and it is therefore virtually impossible to lose your ball.

As you can imagine, these digital caddies are quickly becoming more widespread. As a matter of fact, while renting the golf cart one can rent the GPS golf system as well. For golfers or persons who want to try out the system to see how it works, there are some options that they could buy and which are discussed below.

The Garmin GolfLogix System is a robust and precise unit that is also very user friendly. One of its main features is that it can identify the hazards that are facing you on any particular hole. These hazards include: Front, Center & Back of Green; Bunkers; Water; Lay-ups; and, Carries. The screen advances automatically to all of the targets on the golf course so there are no buttons to push or lasers to point during your round. The system includes a backlight screen that allows you to view information easily even when playing in poor or overcast light.

The most advanced system on the market is the Sonocaddie Caddie Range Finder Pro System N030. The system is palm sized and portable. It keeps you aware of the distance from the targets while on course – with one click of the button you know exactly the length of your drive. The system will also let you know of any hazards and trees. The gadget stores information regarding many courses and you can get further information by downloading a particular course to the system.

For people with windows enabled phones, all you have to do is buy GPS Golf Pro. Since the device is Bluetooth enabled and GPS receiver equipped, it simply networks with the phone and there you have your GPS golf system. It’s as easy as that.

For all those interested in improving their golf handy cap then a Golf GPS device should be on top of their list. It also makes a perfect gift idea if you need a present for a golf lover. With this amazing technology you are almost guaranteed to cut strokes from your game.

Olympic Results : Everything You NEED to Know

The 2008 Beijing Olympics are right around the corner. With all the buzz around the Olympic games, the big question remains where can you find up-to-the-date Olympic results? If you’re an avid sports fan like myself, you don’t want to miss one moment of the action that is about to happen in Beijing. The Beijing National Stadium, which was recently nicknamed the Birds Nest because of its structure is the center piece of the Olympic games. The stadium has a seating capacity of 80,000 people and will be the site of the opening ceremonies, soccer finals, many athletic events, and finally the closing ceremonies.

The Chinese have completely renovated and expanded its subway system in preparation for the Olympic games. It’s been reported that eighty new stations were created, one with a direct link to the Beijing International Airport. As of June 2007, there had been over 2.2 million tickets sold for the upcoming Summer Olympics.

The reason why you are going to want to see the most up-to-the-date Olympic results is the amount of events that are being returned to Beijing. The program setup for Beijing 2008 is very similar to the Athens games that happened in 04. Olympic enthusiasts will see a total of 302 events. 165 men’s events, 127 women’s events, and a total of 10 mixed events. The buzz is definitely being held around the nine brand new events that are being held including cycling that closely resembles BMX. There are tons of new and old sports that are bringing back a lot of excitement to the Olympics.

The 2008 Olympic games will be the very first games in history to be completely produced and broadcasted in HDTV (high definition television). The estimated amount of viewers currently is over four billion during the duration of the games.

As the Olympic games comes close to the opening ceremonies there has been serious concerns over the amount of air pollution in China. The BOCOG (Beijing Organizing Committee) has said that many of China’s factories will cease production in an effort to lower the amount of air pollution and smog that occurs during the outdoor events, such as running.

If you’re considering traveling to Beijing, you’ll definitely want to do your research on Beijing air pollution, Beijing Airport, and Beijing massacre.

While China is a very technologically and economically friendly country, there have been concerns over closed media access and even possible pro-Tibet protestors or terroristic groups. With all the drama, excitement, and fear over the 2008 Beijing Olympics you’ll want to keep in close contact with various websites and television channels that will show the latest Beijing Olympic results. We recommend having a couple of good sources and contacts in China that can keep you updated as to what is happening with the Olympic Games in Beijing.

I wish all the athletes a very safe and exciting 2008 Olympics! May all the sports enthusiasts, athletes, volunteers, workers, and viewers have a safe and enjoyable summer games!

The 5 'Must Play' Golf Courses of the Costa Blanca

One of Spain’s top Mediterranean destinations, the main attractions of the Costa Blanca are its excellent beaches and the range of classic golf courses. With weather that is conducive to year-round visitation, the Costa Blanca also has lots of fascinating old towns and villages to explore, and many bars and restaurants that will tempt you with their variations on the local fine wines and tasty cuisine. The top five Costa Blanca golf courses provide a range of scenery and challenges.

Alicante
------------
Seve Ballesteros designed Alicante with all golfers in mind. However, you need to be cautious in your game, since there are many bunkers and water hazards to avoid. The wide fairways of this 18-hole, Par 72 course
opened in 1998. Set near the beach and surrounded by a housing estate, this is a popular course, with wide fairways and generous greens that give you room to negotiate should your shots go somewhat astray. And the driving range, chipping and putting greens, and practice bunker are perfect for warming up before a game. Afterwards, try the gym and sauna, before heading for the restaurant and snack bar for refreshments.

Alenda
----------
Designed by Roland Favrat, the 18-hole, Par 72 Alenda course will appeal to most levels of players. While the sloping greens on some of the holes may test your ability with the putting iron, most of the fairways are wide and, with concentration, you could cover the course close to par. There are putting and chipping greens, a driving range and a practice bunker, and the pro shop rents out buggies, clubs and trolleys. There is also a restaurant and snack bar.

Altorreal
------------
Located between Alicante and La Manga, the 18-hole, Par 72 championship course combines stunning mountain vistas with a residential backdrop, and more than 20,000 olive, pine and carob trees. There are six lakes that add to the challenge of the course, and a driving range, a practice putting green and a pitching green. The clubhouse has a bar/restaurant and the change rooms include a sauna. You can rent clubs, buggies and trolleys, and golf tuition is available.

Real Campoamor
-------------------------
Both professional and amateur players like this 6,203-metre, Par 72 course with its long, open fairways and pine forest setting. The sloping greens and fairways are the main challenge, but there is a good mix of Par 3, 4, and 5s. Views of the coast are a bonus here. Hire of clubs and buggies is possible, and golf lessons are available. The driving range and putting green will help hone your skills, and the cafeteria, bar and restaurant are just fine for an after game snack or meal.

El Saler
------------
Since Golf World has rated El Saler as Europe’s second-best course, you’d expect it to have exceptional fairways and greens. This must-play course, host of several Spanish Opens, meanders through groves of pines and along dunes in a spectacular coastal setting. You’ll need your best shots here, since bunkers are common. The 6th hole, which is a Par 4, doglegs to the left to make getting on the green in two a challenge. There are the usual hire options, and clubhouse has dining facilities.

Playing golf on the Costa Blanca is a pleasure any time due to the wonderfully mild year round climate. Choose one of the above 5 courses for an exceptional golfing experience.

The 5 'Must Play' Golf Courses of the Costa Brava in Spain

Set between the Pyrenees Mountains and the Mediterranean Sea, the Costa Brava has more than ten golf courses and plenty of excellent holiday accommodation to choose from. Reasonable green fees are a bonus.
And you can visit most times of the year and expect sunny weather and good playing conditions. As well as golf, you have any number of lovely beaches, and a selection of charming old towns and villages that have lots of dining and shopping options.

Club de Golf Costa Brava
------------------------
This moderately sloped course, with its fairways of varied widths, is considered not too challenging. Course architect Hamilton Stutt used the existing cork oaks, olives, and pines to good effect in the design, and the main difficulties involve working you way around, or over, these trees, and avoiding the two artificial lakes. Mostly it is a chip shot that gets you onto the greens. The final hole ends in a bay by the sea. The grand old clubhouse, dating from 1841, is the prefect place to relax in and dine after the game. Or you may choose to practise your shots on the driving range, or take a lesson at the golf school.

Golf d'Aro Mas Nou
------------------
One of the Costa Brava’s oldest courses, this woodland course, with its pines, cork oaks and olives, is set in the Gavarres mountains, 300 m above sea level, with panoramic views of the Costa Brava. Accuracy and low handicap skills are required to stay out of the vegetation lining two-thirds of the fairways, and to make it across the deep ravines. If the wind is up, you may prefer to hit balls on the driving range, or to cool your heels in the clubhouse until conditions improve. Here you’ll find a restaurant, changing rooms, and a sauna, as well as dining facilities. It is little wonder that the International Association of Golf Tour Operators chose this course as its 2000 Best Golf Destination.

Emporda
-------
One of Europe’s top 50 courses, scenic Emporda is immaculately kept, easy walking, and presents challenges for all levels of player. Several of the greens are long, and there are many water features to negotiate, but the designer, von Hagge, has placed mounds between fairways on holes without trees to create varied and exciting playing conditions. There is a golf school and driving range, and the clubhouse has a good bar and restaurant.

Golf Girona
-----------
The Girona course sits well in its environment in the hills near Girona. All levels of player will enjoy this course – architect F.G Hawtree has used the terrain of an old olive orchard grove, and the location between two valleys to craft a distinctive course. Golf lessons are available, and there are pitching and putting greens, and a driving range. The clubhouse has a restaurant and bar.

Platja de Pals
--------------
Arguably one of Spain’s most prestigious courses and a classic designed by F.W Hawtree, there is something for everyone on the compact greens of this scenic course. However, watch out for low-hanging branches from the profusion of trees, since they can send your ball anywhere. Bunkers defend most greens. The clubhouse has a restaurant and superb views of the course and surrounds, and there is a driving range, putting and pitching greens, and a golf school.

Playing golf on the Costa Brava is a pleasure whichever course you decide to play, but a visit to one of our top 5 courses above will ensure a golfing experience of the highest order.

Ping Pong: The Top Ten Mistakes That Beginners Make

Starting ping pong or table tennis-depending on your level of play-is like beginning anything new: it takes time, mistakes, and a whole lot of practice. There are; however, a number of common mistakes that first time ping pong players typically make, and here is how to best avoid them.

1. Grip

Many new ping pong players make the mistake of gripping their paddle incorrectly. Gripping the ping pong paddle incorrectly can affect the range of strokes that you can effectively use, cause undue wear on your wrist, and affect your overall ability to play the game correctly. It is typically recommended that beginners use either the shakehand grip or the penhold grip.

Shakehand Grip: Wrap three bottom fingers around bottom of handle, extend index finger along bottom of the racket, and join the thumb loosely with bottom three fingers at the base of the blade.

Penhold Grip: The penhold grip is just like holding a pen to write: wrap index finger and thumb loosely at the base of the blade, while the three remaining fingers curl and rest around the back of the racket.

2. Stroke

Stroke is one of the most common issues that beginners face. Instead of trying to guide the ball over the net, learn how to stroke the ball so that you have more control.

3. Speed

Though your first instinct when beginning ping pong, may be to whack the ball as hard as possible; this will only land your ball across the room instead on the other side of the table where it should be. Finding the right amount of hit for the ball will give you the control of the ball that you need to play ping pong correctly.

4. Equipment

Though quality is always key in any new equipment for a sport; choosing the right paddle, balls, and table for your playing level is just as important. Basically, do not go out when you are first learning and purchase the same equipment that the Olympic Table Tennis champions use…Instead go to your local sports store or even a specialty table tennis group or school, and ask them what they suggest. Typically, based on what your original strengths and weaknesses are, they can point you to a very basic paddle, ball, and table.

5. Stance

If you’re a beginner at ping pong, chances are you stand in one place more or less when you play; and strain to reach the ball. Movement, however, is absolutely necessary to playing ping pong correctly. It gives you a much wider range of motion and strokes, meanwhile giving your game a better performance.

6. Rules

Even if you are content just to play at home with family or friends, casually; it’s always helpful to know the basic rules of ping pong. Invest in book or simple manual that will tell you how to score, count points, troubleshoot, etc. It will give you a better idea of what you are doing, and make you that much closer to playing the game the right way.

7. Get Advice

Even if you have a book and practice often, you may not be playing correctly, though the rules are a great guideline. Try out a session or class with a table tennis group or school. It certainly will not hurt to get the best foot forward, when beginning to play. This way, you can be shown exactly the right stance and stroke and other maneuvers, instead of just reading them and looking at pictures.

8. Consistency

Beginners, once they have mastered a few strokes and have begun to feel more comfortable with the game, have a tendency to want to change or upgrade equipment. It is always best to practice for a good solid amount of time with the paddle and table, etc that you began with; and then move on should you choose to later on. This will make you more practiced and polished as a ping pong player.

9. Practice

Though it typically goes without saying, practicing ping pong-or anything else for that matter-makes perfect. It is the single most crucial tip to remember if you have any desire in getting better at the sport. It will bring confidence, better form, and a higher level of performance; as well as heightened comfort level with the game.

10. Patience

Second to practice, it that unnerving but significant virtue: patience. It is always overlooked, but the more patient you are in learning something new, the more chance you give yourself to learn the rules, strokes, performance correctly. The same applies to ping pong. Know that if you want to learn how to play as a sport, that it will take some time, practice, and patience.

Table Tennis: A Brief History of the Sport

The sport of table tennis has been encouraging new players, creating Olympic champions, and inspiring crowds of eager spectators for many many years, though few know the true history of the how the sport began, developed, and became what it is today. Below, is a brief digestible history of the sport of table tennis, that will hopefully inspire a better appreciation for it.

Though there are many variations on the initial beginnings of table tennis or ping pong, most scholars and sources concur that table tennis began in England in the late 1800s as a fun after-dinner diversion. Some rumors say it was enacted on the dinner tables themselves, while others stick to the more popular assumption that it began as a lawn and garden game, closely tied to badminton. At this time, they didn’t yet have ping pong paddles, and so English socialites used vellum bats to play. In the 1890s, Parker Brothers began work on an indoor version of the popular lawn tennis, which included the net, paddles, and ball.

In the very beginnings-though table tennis was very very popular in England-it was still looked at as solely casual, certainly not as a sport. It was not until much later-approximately 1905-1910, when table tennis/ping pong started becoming popular in other countries, such as: Japan, China, and Korea. Meanwhile, England created the first official Table Tennis Association for the purpose of finally recognizing the pastime as a sport, but it was the Asian countries who had adopted table tennis to their own national hobbies, that made it the highly competitive and respected sport it now is. These countries took on the pastime as a full-fledged sport to be mastered, and is still a highly popular sport there. Today, millions of people in these countries play; and consider table tennis a highly competitive sport to be respected and perfected.

After a brief period, England took up the sport again in the 1920s as a popular diversion. This is truly when the standardization of the game, i.e. rules, organizations, and competitions were begun. Since then, table tennis has become a popular worldwide sport, and even an Olympic event; with competitive players outnumbering 30 million worldwide and millions non-competitive. It was during this time that table tennis-through a series of adjustments-truly transformed. In 1926, the International atble tennis Federation was formed. In 1935, the three major table tennis organizations: The American Ping Pong Association, The Amateur Table Tennis Association, and the National Table Tennis Association combined to form the U.S. Table Tennis Association. In 1957, with the overwhelming worldwide popularity the once annual worldwide table tennis championships, becomes biennial. Finally, in 1988, table tennis becomes an Olympic sport at that year’s Olympics in Seoul, South Korea.

Today, the game of competitive table tennis has been preserved to almost the same rules, measurements, etc that it began with; it’s most avid competitors and the International Table Tennis Federation ensuring that the human skill and capacity for the sport is not changed with the introduction of new technology.

Travel Back in Time: The History of the Crossbow

History does not exactly tell us where and when the crossbow made its way into our civilization. However there is clear evidence this weapon was used during wartime as early as the end of the 4th century B.C. The first evidence of its use can be found with the Greeks followed by the Eurpoeans. China was also using this weapon as early as the 5th century B.C.

The Greeks

In the Greek world the crossbow emerged during the 5th century as a much larger version of the crossbow. It was called the gastraphetes or “belly-bow” because it was built to placed against the stomach of the archer. The manner of loading this bow resulted in more stored energy than the standard bows that were currently being used.

The gastraphetes ws improved upon. This led to the introduction of the ballista. Its use in war and against the enemies infantry resulted in very powerful bolts and larger ballistae. There was a smaller version of this crossbow called the Scorpio. This was used by snipers.

The Use of the Crossbow in Europe

Crossbows were evident in Europe during the battle of Hastings around 1500 AD. As a matter of fact, they replaced the standard longbow as the primary archer’s weapon because their use could be learned in about a week vs. the longbow which could take years to master. In addition, the crossbow released a faster and deadlier bolt than the standard bow’s arrow. It was also the favored weapon of the peasants.

Asia and the Crossbow

The first indication of crossbows in China comes from documents dated the 4th century BC. These scripts state followers of Mozi used a crossbow catapult in the 6th-5th century BC. In the well known book The Art of War written by Sun Tzu, there is a description of the crossbow and its uses between 500-300 B.C..

Islam and the Crossbow

The Islamic armies adopted the use of this bow after first seeing and experiencing its effect first hand during the crusades. Muslims preferred the footstrap version of this bow during the wars in Spain.

From the Saracens, the Crusaders discovered a composite bow that had layers of different material glued together to increase the strength of the bow. The Eurpoeans adopted this idea for crossbow prods.

America and Africa

Crossbows in Africa were used for hunting and as scout weapons. Africans captured by slavers brought the knowledge of this weapon with them to America. The crossbow became popular in the south and was used extensively for hunting. The Inuit of North America also used lighter versions of the bow for hunting.

The Use of Crossbows in Modern Day

In today’s world the crossbow is used mostly for target shooting. There are still societies however that use it for hunting including Australia, Africa and America. The smaller crossbows are used for harmless blubber extraction in whales. And there are some special forces in the military who use this weapon instead of the noiser firearms

How a Crossbow Works - An Educational Guide to Crossbows

The crossbow is a combination of an archery bow and a rifle. The standard archer’s bow it uses a string to launch ammunition. However, like a rifle, it has a trigger that releases the string.

Advantages of a Crossbow

The nice feature of the crossbow when compared to other bows is there is less physical strength needed to draw the bow as compared to a traditional bow. The crossbow user can draw the string, cock it, and leave the string while taking aim. More traditional bows require the archer to hold the bow at full draw while aiming. In addition, to draw a crossbow requires the use of the archer’s buttock and thigh muscles. These muscles are much stronger than the arm and chest muscles required of a standard bow user.

Crossbow Physics

The crossbow of today is made of strong lightweight materials. The bow is simply a spring. If you compress a spring or pull a spring from either end it stores potential energy that is released as kinetic energy when the spring is released and returns to its normal shape.

The same thing happens to a crossbow. When you draw the bow, the limbs or tips move closer to the archer. When the string is let go the bow returns to its standard shape. The movement of the bow back to its original shape is what launches the projectile.

Energy Stored

The amount of energy in a bow depends on its draw weight and draw length. The draw weight is the strength needed to pull the bowstring back. The draw length is the distance between the string at rest and the string fully pulled back. A bow can hold energy equal to the draw weight times the draw length divided by two. In other words, the power of a bow depends on how much strength it takes to pull back the string of the bow and how far back you can pull it. Bow makers express this strength in terms of the bow’s energy measured in joules and the arrow’s speed in feet per second.

Factors that affect the draw weight and draw length

The size of the bow can change a bow’s power. A longbow is more powerful than a short bow. The shape of the bow affects speed of the projectile. For example, recurve bows have bows that curve away from the archer and this shortens the bracing height. As a result extra momentum is forced onto the projectile. The composition of the bow can also affect is power. A bow’s tensile strength and density determine not only the amount of energy it holds but also how quickly and exactly it can return to its original shape. Today’s bows use different materials in different parts of the bow to better serve that particular part or function of the part.

As you can see the crossbow works like a spring. As the spring is compressed, or the bowstring drawn back energy get stored as potential energy. When the trigger of the crossbow is released, like the spring, the crossbow will return to its original resting state dispensing the potential energy it stored as kinetic energy. This kinetic energy is responsible for launching the ammunition at high velocity.

WHAT is a CROSSBOW - An Educational Article About Crossbows

A crossbow is a weapon primarily used by hunters. It consists of a bow placed on a stock. The purpose of the crossbow is to shoot projectiles, called bolts, at a target. There is a mechanism in the stock of the crossbow that holds the bow fully drawn. The bow is realized by pressing a trigger. In the past, the crossbow was used not only for hunting but also as a weapon in open warfare.

Crossbow Structure

The bow of the crossbow is fixed to a stick called the stock or tiller. There is a mechanism that holds the bowstring in the drawn position. The bow is also called the prod or lath and is usually made of a single piece of wood. It is very short compared to a standard bow. As a result the draw length of a crossbow is also very short. Consequently a higher draw weight is necessary to store sufficient energy to launch the projectile effectively.

Types of Crossbows

Crossbows are classified according to the acceleration system, size, energy, degree of automation and projectiles.

Straight Bow

The straight and bent prods are the simplest of the acceleration systems. These were the earliest developed of the crossbows.

Recurve Bow

The recurve crossbow is made with tips that curve away from the person firing the bow. This results in a longer draw length and better acceleration of the projectile. These bows do put more strain on the bow material and are a bit noisier when fired.

Multiple Bow

This bow has a singular manner of pulling the string using several bows. It is similar to a compound bow. Many bows are used in combination with a tackle system. This results in a faster string speed due to the effect of many bows working at once.
Compound Crossbow

With a compound crossbow the extremities are stiffer than a recurve bow resulting in more energy efficiency. However, because the limbs are too stiff to draw using a string directly attached to them, the bow has the string attached to pulleys with cables. Drawing the string causes the pulleys to rotate, which pulls the cables that bend the limbs thus storing energy. This system allows for a let-off thus lowering the full draw weight.

Ammunition

The projectiles that shoot from a crossbow are called bolts. Obviously they are shorter than arrows but can be heavier. Each variation bow has an ideal bolt weight to achieve maximum kinetic energy. The bolts usually have 3 fletches such as are seen on arrows. The bolts can attach to many difference heads depending on the use of the bow. The most common bolt is the four-sided quarrel.

Attachments for the Crossbow

Crossbows contain sights such as red dot sights or telescopic sights. They may also have multiple crosshairs due to gravitational effects over multiple distances.

Crossbows can also have quivers attached to them. Made of plastic, they hold the bolt along the side of the weapon.

Silencers can also be attached to crossbows that are rather noisy when shot. These silencers are attached to parts of the bow that vibrate quickly causing noise.

Crossbow in Modern Times

The crossbow of today is used mostly for target shooting. Hunters still use this weapon throughout the world. The crossbow, used with special projectiles, enables whale researchers to take blubber samples without harm to the whale. In the military the Special Forces use these weapons, some tipped with cyanide, in place of a loud gun.

How the Arrow Flies With Your Compound Bow

Almost all archers and bowhunter of the modern world use the compound bow. Very few bowhunters know how this bow works. The physics behind the compound bow is what makes the arrow fly so straight and accurate.

Energy in the Compound Bow

As the bow is drawn back, the wheels and/or cams rotate. This pulls the limbs together. Energy is contained within the cams, wheels and limbs of the bow. The more energy that is stored, the faster the arrow will fly and the harder the arrow will hit its target. How much energy is stored depends on 3 factors: how far back the string is drawn, the shape of the cams, and the bow’s top draw weight.

How the Compound Bow Creates Let-Off

Let-off is created by levers in the cams. When the bow is at rest the lever between the string and axle is shorter than between the axle and cable. Since the cable is the stronger of the two, the string is under more stress or tension.

When you draw the compound bow the levers change. When the bow is fully drawn the cable is very close to the axle but the string has moved away. The lever arms have now reversed and the string has the advantage over the cable. This results in a decrease in the holding weight, called the let-off.

Arrows and Accuracy

The AMO (Archery Manufacturer’s Organization) is a committee that sets standards on the compound bow and other tools involved in the sport of archery. The AMO has devised a method for measuring the speed of an arrow: shooting a 540-grain arrow from a 60-pound bow with a draw length of 30 inches. All compound bows will have an AMO speed as well as all other bows available for purchase. Another organization, the International Bowhunter’s Organization (IBO) has also devised a measurement for arrow speed that seems to be becoming more popular. This speed is determined by shooting a 350-grain arrow from a 70-pound bow with a draw of 30 inches. The AMO speed will always be lower than the IBO speed.
Best Speed

AMO speeds from 200-215 fps and IBO speeds of 275-290 fps are considered called low performers. The compound bow with this design makes up for poor form. This bow is best used when aiming at targets. A bow with a speed of 215-235 fps or an IBO of 290-315 fps is considered a middle of the road bow. With this bow you get good speed and ease of shot. This is an excellent compound bow for hunting. When speeds go past 235 fps for AMO and 315 fps IBO stay away unless you are a very experienced archer. Use this bow for hunting only when the speed of the arrow is vital to the target.
What Affects Speed and Accuracy?

The distance from the string to the grip when the bow is at rest is a major contributor to speed and accuracy. The bottom brace height should be seven inches. With longer distances they bow is more accurate. At less than seven inches the compound bow is harder to shoot unless your form is absolutely perfect. This is because the arrow will stay on the string for a longer time so any flaws in form are amplified.

The best bow for the average hunter or archer is the middle of the road bow. You will get enough accuracy and speed even with a flawed form.

Setting Up & Tunning a Compound Bow

Before putting your compound bow together, carefully read the owner’s manual. If you read some instructions that are not quite clear there should be a customer service # on the instructions that you can call to clarify any confusion.

Parts Inspection

Carefully remove your compound bow from the box and take off all the plastic wrapping and discard. Your owner’s manual should have a packing list of all the parts that come with your bow. Match the parts on the list to what is in the shipping box. If you are missing any parts, or it is obvious a part is damaged, immediately call customer service.

Bow Inspection

Begin by inspecting your new compound bow carefully. Keep an eye out for any cracks or irregularities. Make sure the strings and cables have not come off the cam tracks and are fixed to the limbs. Check all the bolts and screws and be sure they are tight. Examine the rubber dampers, cam modules and inner cams.

Setting the Draw Weight

To set the draw weight you will need to turn the bolts on the limbs of your compound bow. To increase the weight turn the bolts clockwise. To decrease the draw weight turn the bolts counter-clockwise. Make sure you turn each bolt the same amount.

Set the Tiller

Your next step is to examine the tiller. The string-to-riser distance must be the same for both limbs. If the distance varies by approximately 1/8-inch or more adjust the bolts on the limbs in the opposite direction until the distance is corrected. If you have a One-Cam compound bow the tiller needs to be measured by tying string from axle to axle and measuring the tiller with that string.

Checking Cam Orientation

When the bow is not being drawn the orientation marks of the cam should be within a strings width of the mark if the string is set in the center or dotted post. Make sure your timing marks are even from bottom to top.

The Hybrid Cam System and the Draw Stop

Draw your compound bow full back so the split harness cable contacts the draw stop on the bottom cam. Make sure the control cable is contacting the flat part of the module on the top cam. If needed, turn the control cable and adjust the top cam so the string makes contact on the flat.

For a bow with a twin cam you check the timing by drawing the bow back, making sure both cams rollover at the same time. Twist or untwist the cables until this roll over occurs simultaneously. .

Arrow Rest

Follow the instructions in your owner’s manual for installing the arrow rest. If you have the Posi-Lock feature, use this to mount the arrow rest to your compound bow. Set the center shot adjustment on the arrow rest so it is parallel to the alignment mark. Then using the nocking loop and rest adjustment set the arrow in place parallel to the alignment mark on the bow window. The arrow should pass in front of the mounting hole on the arrow rest.

Installing the Sight

Follow the instructions in your owner’s manual for installing the sight. Secure your compound bow in a vise. Using a level set the bow. Check the sight to be sure it is level too.

Final Step

Finally install the stabilizer and sling according to your owner’s manual. Check all bolts to be sure they are tight. You are now done preparing your compound bow. Have fun shooting!

Rod Building: Picking the Right Handle

Is rod building a challenge? It can be but the main reason rod building can be such a challenge is primarily that you have so many big decisions to make about the different elements of the right fishing rod for your needs. Picking blanks is critical but if you don’t spend some time on selecting the best handle for your grip and your cast then you’ll end up with a less than perfect finished product.

Let’s look at some of the basics of handle selection when it comes to rod building.

Handle Elements

While there are a wide rang of handle materials available, a few are more common than others. You may want to choose something exotic but you’ll probably be happy with one of these choices. In some cases, you might even want to select multiple materials because certain elements may be better for one part over another.

With that in mind, there are three main types of handles you might choose from with your rod building

Cork is an excellent choice because it is very lightweight. This is a nice benefit as you probably know because you don’t want a heavy material that is going to make casting difficult. Unfortunately, you may have a hard time finding high-quality cork. If you can find cork, another benefit is that it can easily be shaped into the handle of your choice.

If you want something a little heavier, consider rubber cork. It is made of a combination of cork and rubber. The material provides greater durability. Generally, rubber cork is more affordable and easier to find but that may be changing as petroleum costs keep rising.

Another cork-related option is burl cork. Basically, this material is made from a lot of different materials – mainly cork and rubber – in different sizes. If you’re interested in the appearance of the finished rod, you might want to choose burl cork because it can be purchased in many colorful varieties. Of course, don’t let the appearance be the primary concern of your rod building activities.

Custom or Pre-Formed Handles

Even after you’ve decided on a material for your rod building, you need to make another critical decision. You can purchase handles that have already been built and that come in a variety of materials, including the three listed above. Pre-formed handles will be easier to get and will make the process of rod building a lot easier. If you take this option, test some handles out before you purchase one online. You’ll have more selection available but you’ll have a good idea of what you need.

The other option is having a custom built handle. Building the handle from scratch is probably the best choice if you are serious about truly having a piece of custom equipment for your fishing rod. However, there are a number of good reasons not to opt for this choice, including the cost and the time involved but it’s definitely something you may want to consider for your own rod building.

Now, who is going to argue with getting a little added exercise? Not me. Riding a bicycle is also beneficial because it doesn’t cost as much as it would to spend money on a vehicle. However, there are obvious drawbacks to having a bicycle versus not having a bicycle. For example, if you only had a bicycle, then getting to work would be extremely difficult for a lot of people. For instance, if you were a business woman or business man, and had to go to work in a suit and tie, the last thing you’d want to do is ride a bike (especially on a hot summer day) only to get all sweaty. Besides that fact, how far would it be for you to bike to work, and would you have to take the highway or could you take local back streets? What about your briefcase, portfolio or other items that you might’ve had to bring with you?

Obviously, it is not a very realistic thing for a lot of people. However, it is a good idea sometimes. For those of you who are interested, it is also possible to recycle your bicycle. If you’ve had your bike for a number of years and have deemed it totally inoperable, you can still recycle it. Many local recycling centers actually have a mixed metals recycling facility in them where you can recycle the metal parts of your bike. If you are unsure, simply contact the recycling center to find out the opening hours, which can vary for cars and vans. And yes, you would need some other form of your own transportation to get there besides a bike! Before you take your beloved bike to the recycling center, make sure that you remove any and all of the rubber or plastic parts of it such as the tires, inner tubes of the tires, saddles (those rubbery things that go over your pedals), brakes, plastic lights or other accoutrement, lock fittings bells and/or whistles.

If you don’t want to take your bicycle to a recycling center because the thought of it being stripped and torn apart is too much than you can bear, than you can always feel free to donate your bicycle to a homeless shelter or other outreach-type program such as your local YMCA or Salvation Army. If you are unsure of the various community outreach programs in your area, simply call information, ask around, visit a church (they usually have local bulletins and postings or outreach groups within the church), or surf the Internet to find out. There is no limit to what you can do with your old bike or anything that you might have that you don’t use anymore.

Remember that saying that states “one man’s junk is another man’s gold!” It’s true. You may no longer have a use for you bicycle, but if you simply throw it out, you will never know how that bike could have possibly brought joy to another person’s life.

Sinking Boats: Abandon Ship!

Remember those funny cartoons you’d watch as a kid where some cartoon characters are in a boat when suddenly there’s a hole. In an effort to counteract the effects of this hole in the boat, people start using pails to scoop the water out; however, they can’t keep up and eventually the boat sinks as a consequence. Well, this also happens in real life.

Every year, thousands of boats of all shapes and sizes sink. The most ironic part is that most of them sink when they’re not even in use; they’re at the dock!. As a matter of fact, sinking boats is perhaps one of the biggest losses to marinas all over the world.

Why is this: because marine insurance is too expensive. Perhaps one of the major reasons that boats sink is because the people who own them are neglectful. Another possible reason may be due to the fact that the people manufacturing, building and distributing the boats are inexperienced themselves or have inexperience, inefficient staff members. Now, there’s a scary thought. I mean, imagine if the people who build cars didn’t have qualified staff on hand? Ugh- I don’t even want to think about all of the negative consequences that could come out of that.

According to David Pascoe, boating specialist at http://yachtsurvey.com, the major causes of boats sinking can be broken down into two categories: hull design and internal systems. In terms of the hull design, Pascoe claims that hull design problems usually involve boats under 40 feet long and more often boats that are under 30 feet long. The smaller your boat is, the more likely it is to sink because smaller boats sink faster than larger ones. When it comes down to powerboats and why they sink, it is usually because of the cockpits being improperly designed. For sailboats, the reason is due to improper head installation, sink drains and inadequate bilge pumps.

Many people who own boats do not realize the value of weight distribution. For example, if you have a smaller boat, you need to pay even more attention to the bilge pump because if that fails, then you are going to really be up a creek. Pascoe goes on later to say that improper design or use of poor quality materials is the cause of the majority of boats sinking. Internal system failures, as he calls it, fall into three main categories: reverse siphoning resulting from errors in plumbing, insufficient bilge pumping or batter failure and failed hull fittings and hoses.

If you are thinking of purchasing a boat, you really need to make sure that you properly inspect the boat for any problems before hand. If you are already a boat owner, you need to make it your duty or responsibility to (every time) always check over your boat thoroughly before you take it out on the water. After all, the last thing you want is to have a problem or end up in “hot water” when you’re miles away from everything. It is also a good idea to make sure that you always wear your life vest for this reason as well as have a working radio and/or tell someone where you are planning on going for that day.

Stolen Boats

If you have ever had something stolen, it can really stink- especially if the item or items that were taken cost you a great deal of money. What if that item happened to be your $30,000 boat? Believe it or not, boats get stolen every day- more than you think. In states where boating is really popular, such as Florida, there are approximately 5,000 boats that are reported stolen each year. However, there are close to one million registered boats in that state alone, which mean that people aren’t even reporting their boats as being stolen!

There are plenty of crafty people out there. What I mean by this, is that there are people out there who purchase boats, knowing that they cannot afford the insurance for it. The person will usually end up keeping the boat until they get caught with no insurance or something else catches up to them. More often than not, boat owners who have insurance but who find themselves in some sort of financial trouble will often sell their boat for whatever price they can get for it. They will then turn right around and report the boat as being stolen so that they can collect the insurance money.

If you are thinking of purchasing a boat from a private seller, make sure you do your own research as a responsible boat owner. Most people who end up purchasing stolen boats don’t even realize that they’ve done so. This is bad news for the person who is trying to buy the boat. You see, what happens is that the state’s title agency will send representatives out to look for the stolen boat (which you have in your possession. It won’t matter whether or not you had any prior knowledge of the boat being stolen. The boat will automatically be seized, and you will be out however much money you originally put down to purchase the boat. If anything, you may actually find yourself defending or trying to fend off criminal charges as a result of the scandal.

In the meantime, the real criminal in this case (the person who sold you the boat), gets off scott free! All boats come with Hull Identification Numbers (HIN). These numbers are similar to the Vehicle Identification Numbers (VIN) that you see on a vehicle. However, the HIN is molded onto the plastic of the hull, which makes it extremely easy to alter. Most thieves can alter this number in less than an hour.

If you are purchasing a boat from a private owner, make sure you examine the HIN. These numbers can be altered by grinding out the old numbers and molding a new number in place with a new gel coat. There should be no ripples or waviness around the numbers. Also, be suspicious if the molding isn’t smooth and/or the numbers aren’t very clear. Also, be wary if the seller has only had the boat for less than a year, if there are any freshly painted areas of the boat, if the owner cannot provide records such as repair invoices. Make sure you contact the state titling agency to verify the hull and registration number against the seller’s name and address.
